The best sleeper decks of Duel commander you can try

17.07.2023

The Duel commander metagame is overall quite diverse and there are a ton of decks to choose from, whether it is aggro, control or even combo. However there are also decks that you don't usually see in metagame tier lists or played but can still achieve access. This article is about shining a spotlight on these sleeper decks and commanders you can try if you are bored of the metagame or would simple like to play something new...

(Exaple decklists at the end of article...)

Slimefoot and Squee

Slimefoot and Squee is one of the newer commander only being released about 3 months ago in March of the Machine. It's a powerful jund aggro/midrange deck similar to design to decks like Grist, the Hunger Tide. The deck can be quite good for smaller and bigger tournaments alike, it even recently finished in the top 4 of a 60-player tournament, so you can certainly have success with it if piloted well.

The core of the deck consists of cheap but powerful creatures and a ton of great removal spells. In the mid-game, mighty creatures such as Chaos Defiler, Thragtusk and Caves of Chaos Adventurer can help you finish your opponent or survive against aggressive decks. Slimefoot and Squee can help you bring these powerful cards back and generate extra blockers if you need them...

Marath, Will of the Wild

Marath is one of those commanders that used to be much better in the past, but it can still do some work. If you are a fan of aggro decks and want to try something different you could give it a try. Marath may not be as good as he once used to but the deck still has the same strengths as before, a toolbox of the best creatures and a commander that scales in power as the game goes on.

In the decklists, you can find some well-known midrange creatures like White Plume Adventurer and Seasoned Pyromancer. Thanks to the access to three colors, the deck can play powerful planeswalkers like Minsc and Boo, Timeless Heroes and others while also having a ton of great removal spells. I would consider giving Marath a try if you like aggro decks or just to simply relive the past...

The Beamtown Bullies

One of the more unique decks in my opinion is The Beamtown Bullies. This deck is perfect for fans of combo decks. The core of the deck consists of the usual midrange/tempo jund package but it also has another thing to it. The decklist is full of tutors to help you get a card in the graveyard and then give it to your opponent as a "nice" gift.

The "gift" in question is the card, Leveler. This card completely exiles your opponent's deck with the help of The Beamtown Bullies. Now you just need to wait till your opponent draws a card at the beginning of their next turn and loses the game. To help you get Leveler into the graveyard, cards like Goblin Engineer and Unmarked Grave are cheap ways to do so early in the game. If this sounds interesting to you, consider giving The Beamtown Bullies a try...

Old Rutstein

If you are a fan of reanimator decks, Old Rustein may be a deck for you. He gives you a ton of value every upkeep as he continues to fill your graveyard and give you treasures, blood tokens and insects. The deck is full of mighty creatures that you can cheat out very early in the game and a pretty much all the mana dorks in the format to help you play them normally.

Cards like Fatal Push, Collective Brutality and others will help you slow down your opponent while you fill your graveyard full of value. Threats like Titan of Industry, Archon of Cruelty, Razaketh, the Foulblooded are just some of the many beaters that you can get onto the battlefield quite quickly. The deck is no Dihada but it's still a pretty solid choice and those many great finishes in tournaments certainly agree...
